Content Marketing is the Way to Go

Mar 30, 2017

SEO is all about content marketing.

Let’s explore the two terms and you’ll see how they’re intertwined with each other.

What is Content Marketing?

You’ve probably heard that content is king. It’s almost every piece of information we see online. Content is anything from an email to a tweet, from a product description to a product image.

The Content Marketing Institute defines content marketing as “a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”

Content marketing, then, is leveraging valuable content to drive traffic, increase audience retention, and establish yourself as a credible brand.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

SEO only exists when content does. SEO needs to crawl keywords, backlinks, and substance to determine what and how to rank your website on search engines.

While SEO also deals with more technical aspects of your website, like the robots.txt and metadata, it still relies heavily on your content. Good SEO also means a good user experience. Good content also creates good UX, that’s why SEO prefers fresh, valuable, and consistent content.

Types of Content Marketing

There are many types of content you can create for your content marketing strategy. Here are a few examples:

 Blog Articles

Blog articles involve content writing, the most obvious type of content marketing. Have a sufficient amount of evergreen content that’s useful and stays relevant over time. “How To” tutorials and lists are usually good formats for evergreen content and for SEO. Of course, you should also create other blog posts around similar topics that are fun to read.

 Infographics

Well-designed infographics that include statistics and information are good content that gets shared around a lot. Think about how many infographics you’ve come across on Pinterest and other engaging websites.

 Videos

Video is the present and the future. YouTube’s massive success shows how impactful videos can be, even amateur and personal videos. The viral video marketing campaign Will it Blend? is the perfect example of using video content to generate hype and discussions, although it all started with one silly video.

How to Use Content Marketing for SEO

Are you ready to jump into content marketing? Wait a second. Moz thinks you should know what your audience wants before you invest in content creation.

Before you dive into writing long pieces of blog articles and informative email newsletters, you have to find out your niche in the industry. You should first conduct a keyword research and SEO analysis to find out what people are searching for and what they need to know. Go on Facebook groups and forums related to your industry and see what people are talking about. Ask yourself: who are you trying to reach? what type of content in your niche generates a lot of engagement? Why are your competitors popular?

Then, create your content around it. You should be creating unique and useful content that people would want to share. Make sure your text content is accompanied by the use of imagery so your content is more engaging and interactive.

Lastly, remember that content marketing doesn’t grant your business overnight success. It’s a long-term investment that’ll establish yourself as a solid brand with authority. By the time your customers are ready to make a purchase, they’ll already have enough trust in you that they don’t need to look elsewhere. Other than boosting SEO, content marketing also provides for your other digital marketing channels like social media.
